The beautiful land of Shiva aka Varanasi is famous for its stunning temples. With a very long spiritual legacy of 3000 years, Varanasi is one of the important pilgrimage centres of India. Varanasi includes 87 enchanting Ghats situated around 7km long and calming Ganga. The holy river welcomes people from all around the world. Dev Diwali is one of the grand events in Varanasi.

Varanasi is the only place in e world where Diwali is celebrated twice. In Varanasi, Dev Diwali is celebrated 15 days after the night of ‘Kaartik Purnima’ . Every temple is covered in twinkling lights and beautiful flowers. The serene water of Ganga reflects the lights and the holy water comes to life. Ghats are decorated with diyas maintaining the 25 years old tradition.

A huge crowd of devotees from all around the world come for ‘Ganga snaan’. Millions of diyas are lit up from Ravidas ghat to Rajghat. Twinkling lights and diyas are a stunning sight to everybody and attracts a huge amount of people.

The number of devotees and diyas both are countless but who cares about the numbers when you are in a spiritual heaven. The soul enlightening views and ‘vidhis’ is just the beginning. Musical programs are conducted to welcome the large crowds. Whether it’s beautiful views, spiritually awakening vibes, music or boat rides Varanasi has a lot to offer basically, Varanasi has something for everyone.

The smell of burnt firewood and fragrance of incense fills up the crowded streets of Varanasi. The beautiful architectural designs of old temples can’t be ignored when one visits the sacred city. The houses are lit up with oil lamps, lights and Dias on front doors.

Between all this, devotees take processions of decorated deities on the streets; everybody comes around to take blessings from the deities. Nagadas and Dhols are played to utter joy; people living around express their happiness by dancing on the beats of traditional music. Oil lamps and Dias are set afloat on the holy river. The sky looks angelic with floating lamps.

Nearly 100,000 pilgrims visit the riverfront to watch the magic of twinkles spread all over the river. The aarti is performed by 21 young Brahmin priests and 24 young women. Martyrs are also remembered at the Ghats by worshipping Ganga and lightning lamps while watching the aarti. It is quite evident that Dev Diwali plays various roles besides only the religious ones.

Dev Diwali is barely a 25-year-old tradition in Varanasi but now, one cannot imagine Varanasi without it. A festival full of lights, hymns, bhajans and bliss is nothing but a spiritual heaven.
